CA Auto Insurance: Filing Claims

11/30/2011 7:32:57 AM

We all hate auto accidents, and if you have never been involved in one before, you may not know what steps to take if it happens to you. First and foremost, before driving you should ensure you have sufficient coverage under your CA auto insurance policy for bodily and property damages, preferably beyond the minimum amount required in California. You should also have the contact details of your insurance provider or agent as well as your policy documents handy.

The Insurance Information Institute lists the following steps for filing an auto insurance claim:

  • Contact your insurance agent or company as soon as possible, even when the accident is relatively minor.
  • You will be required to complete a “proof of claim” form supplied by your insurer - ask for their advice if you need help in completing it and also if any other documents are required.
  • Follow all the instructions given to you by your insurer, and keep records of names and numbers of people you have spoken to, as well as the dates and times.
  • Questions to ask your insurance provider or agent include time limits for claim filing and resolutions, how many repair estimates you need for your car, and whether a rental car will be covered in the meantime.

Should you have a lot of questions running through your mind, it might be a good idea to write them down on a piece of paper so that when you speak to your agent or insurance company or agent about your CA auto insurance policy you know exactly what to ask.
