CA auto insurance: Is “greener” driving possible?

12/30/2011 9:27:01 AM
Many of us would like to feel we are contributing to improving the environment we live in, and may have concerns about the amount of driving we do. It’s helpful to know that some insurance companies that provide CA auto insurance and other types of insurance coverage are now introducing “green” products. These could benefit both the consumer and the environment at the same time. These include items such as premium discounts for green building practices and support for businesses engaging in carbon trading programs.

For drivers, the new “Pay-As-You-Drive” (PAYD) programs may be attractive to those interested in green issues and may act as an incentive to reduce the number of miles they drive. PAYD programs work by charging premiums based on the number of miles driven, with mileage being checked by either an odometer inspection or by a mileage transmitting device that provides the insurer with this information.

This sort of program gives the insured person more control over the amount of insurance premium he or she is willing to pay. The thought of saving money may provide an incentive to think twice before jumping in the car several times a day to pick up forgotten items from the store.

So the next time you renew your CA auto insurance, ask us about PAYD programs and other green products – you might just find you get to save some dollars and make a contribution towards reducing pollution in the process!
