Preparing an RV for Winter Travel

Just because summer is over, that doesn’t mean you have to put off your road trip until next year. The autumn and upcoming holiday season are often the most popular time of year for many people to travel. So, if you are planning a trip in your family’s RV, then this might be the perfect time to do it.a bus traveling down a dirt road

However, just because the weather is fair here in southern California, that doesn’t mean that it will be that way everywhere. If you plan to travel to an area where winter weather conditions are common, then you will need to prepare your vehicle before hitting the road. What are some of the things to do?

Winter Travel Tips for RV Owners

Cold, wet winter weather can negatively impact travelers and their vehicles. RVs are no less vulnerable than any other car. So, if you plan to take your family on an RV trip this winter, then remember to take the following steps to get ready.

  • Check the caulking and seals around doors, windows and all corners and edges of the vehicle. If you see cracks or missing sections of caulking, then repair it. Caulking will make sure that your vehicle remains sealed and resistant to moisture and other debris.

  • Protect your water tank and hoses. If water freezes in your vehicle, then it can cause extensive damage. Wrap your pipes in insulation to protect them from the cold. Do not keep standing water in your tanks if you plan to not use the vehicle for long periods.

  • Insulate the vehicle appropriately. You might need to cover your windows and wrap your refrigerator pipes, gas lines and outside vents.

  • Make sure your tires are winter-ready. Test them to ensure they have appropriate air pressure, and consider installing tire chains on them, if necessary.

  • Take precautions to stay warm. Consider placing a space heater in your vehicle but be careful to keep it away from flammable items. Travel with plenty of blankets and warm clothes. Also take along a hair dryer to help fight frozen pipes.

  • Check the vehicle’s fluid levels, battery and engine before leaving. Cold weather could cause old or damaged systems to ultimately fail.

  • Make sure that your headlights and wipers work appropriately.

  • Carry emergency equipment like a shovel, ice melt, cat litter (for traction), jumper cables and a generator with you.

  • Keep your cell phones turned on and make sure they have service at all times.

Of course, don’t forget to follow the rules of the road when on your winter excursion. Safe driving, prudence and planning will help you avoid accident risks and the risk of having to file an expensive RV insurance claim.
